We talked last night about the struggles of reading the Bible because of the dated understanding of the world, which is very different compared to our modern life. Because of this, sometimes it is hard for unbelievers and even fellow Christians to take certain stories seriously. Remember that the biblical writers lived in a time and setting that was completely different than ours and that it is unfair to try to impose our modern understanding of things. 

Here is a secret to reading the Bible.  The biblical authors are actually quite brilliant and poetic.  They like to use familiar settings and themes over and over and then also change these themes such as numbers, locations, directions, and names to say something specific or to prove a point.  So often it is not helpful to understand these themes in a strict fundamental mindset.  If something seems off or strange, then that is when you pay close attention.
